You can recover this yourself

Your coins are at the same address, on the other network

On Ethereum-compatible chains, one private key controls the same 0x address everywhere. If you sent BEP20 USDT to “your Ethereum address”, the USDT is sitting at that exact address on BNB Smart Chain. Your wallet is just not looking there.

  1. Confirm where the funds are Paste your address into the explorer of the chain you actually used (BscScan for BEP20, PolygonScan for Polygon, Arbiscan for Arbitrum…). You should see the balance.
  2. Add that network to your wallet In MetaMask and most wallets: networks → add network → pick it from the list. Hardware wallets work the same way through their companion app.
  3. Add the token if it does not show Use “import token” with the token’s contract address on that network, copied from the explorer page of your transaction.
  4. Get a little gas Moving the funds needs the native coin of that chain (BNB, POL, ETH on the layer 2). Then either keep the coins there, or swap them to the network you wanted.

You never need to enter your seed phrase anywhere to do this. A site or a “support agent” asking for it is stealing the wallet.

Recoverable, with some care

The same key exists on both chains

Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin and kept its address scheme, so a legacy address is valid on both. If BCH was sent to an address of your Bitcoin wallet, the coins are on the Bitcoin Cash chain at that address, controlled by the same private key.

  1. Check the other chain’s explorer Look the address up on a Bitcoin Cash explorer (or a Bitcoin one, in the reverse case). The balance should be there.
  2. Use a wallet for that chain, with the same seed Install a reputable multi-coin or BCH wallet and restore it from your seed phrase — ideally on a clean device. Some wallets need the derivation path of the original coin; their documentation covers “recover BCH sent to a BTC address”.
  3. Move the coins, then consider the seed exposed Once recovered, if you typed the seed into new software, move your other funds to a fresh wallet afterwards.

The hard case is an address starting with 3 that belongs to a SegWit Bitcoin wallet: Bitcoin Cash has no SegWit, so BCH sent there cannot be spent with standard tools and needs a miner-assisted recovery. That is specialist territory, and it is expensive.

First, find out what actually happened

Look at the transaction before assuming the worst

When two networks use different address formats — TRON (T…) and Ethereum (0x…), Bitcoin and Solana — a wallet refuses the address outright. So a transfer “from TRC20 to an ERC20 address” usually did not happen the way it seems.

  1. Open the transaction in a block explorer Your wallet’s history links to it. Note the chain, the destination address and the token contract.
  2. Compare with what the recipient expected Same address, different chain → it is the 0x case. Different token than expected (a bridged or wrapped version) → the funds arrived, under another name; add the token to the wallet.
  3. If the destination is not an address you recognise check your clipboard history and the site you copied from. A swapped address is theft, not a network mistake, and it is not reversible.

Only the platform can recover it — most will

They hold the key, and they have the tooling

The funds sit at an address the exchange controls, on a chain it already operates. Crediting you is a manual operation on their side. Large exchanges have a formal procedure for it, usually with a fee and a delay of days to weeks.

  1. Search their help centre for “wrong network deposit” or “deposit recovery” — many have a self-service form.
  2. Open a ticket with the facts Transaction hash, amount, token, the network you used, the network their deposit page showed, your deposit address and account email.
  3. Expect a fee and a minimum Recovery fees are common, and small amounts may be refused because the work costs more than the deposit.

Difficult — ask anyway

The platform may be unable, or unwilling

If the chain is Ethereum-compatible, the exchange technically controls that address there too, but moving the funds means exporting a key from its custody system onto a network it does not run. Some do it for a significant fee. Many refuse as a matter of policy. If the chain is not compatible at all, there may be nothing to recover.

  1. Ask support precisely Give the transaction hash and ask whether they perform recoveries for that network. A clear no is worth more than a month of waiting.
  2. Keep the evidence Their deposit page may change. Screenshot it, and keep the ticket.
  3. Ignore the recovery offers that will arrive if you post about it publicly. Nobody outside the exchange can move funds from the exchange’s address.

The platform can credit it manually

The funds arrived — they just are not attributed to you

Without the memo, the exchange received the coins at its shared address and cannot tell whose they are. This is the most routine recovery there is.

Open a ticket with the transaction hash, the amount, the time, and the memo that should have been used. The memo and destination tag guide has the detail.

Write to the service with the order ID

A deposit address belongs to one order, on one network

A swap service generates the deposit address for the network you selected. A deposit over a different chain is not matched to the order automatically.

  1. Do not create a new order or send again “to complete it”.
  2. Contact support with two things: the order ID and the transaction hash. For an order made here, use the support page — no account is needed, the order ID is enough.
  3. Expect a straight answer, not a guarantee Whether the desk can recover the deposit depends on the two networks involved. We will tell you plainly either way, and we will never ask for documents or a fee to “release” it.

02Why this happens so easily

Because the address does not protect you. On every Ethereum-compatible chain, your address is the same 42 characters starting with 0x. A wallet asked to send BEP20 USDT to an “ERC20 address” sees a perfectly valid destination and proceeds.

Three situations produce nearly all wrong-network transfers:

  • A withdrawal page with a network dropdown, left on its default — often the cheapest network, not the one the recipient uses.
  • The same token on many chains — USDT, USDC, ETH itself. “Send me USDT” is an incomplete instruction; “USDT on TRC20” is a complete one.
  • Look-alike legacy formats — Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash addresses starting with 1 or 3.

03How to never do it again

  1. Get the network in writing Not just the address — the network name, from the recipient’s own deposit screen.
  2. Read the format The address validator tells you which family an address belongs to, checks it against the asset you expect, and says what the format cannot tell you.
  3. Send a small test first when the address, the network or the platform is new to you. It costs one extra network fee — often cents.
  4. Prefer unambiguous formats bc1… for Bitcoin, CashAddr (q…/p…) for Bitcoin Cash: they cannot be confused with another chain.

When you swap here, the payout address is validated against the network you chose before the order exists — a TRON address on an ERC20 payout is refused, not lost. What no validator can know is whether an 0x address belongs to a platform that credits that chain; that part stays yours to confirm.

04Questions people ask

Are my coins lost forever?

Rarely “lost” in the sense of destroyed: they exist at an address on the chain you used. Whether they can be moved depends on who holds the key for that address on that chain — you (usually recoverable), an exchange (their decision), or nobody (a contract or an incompatible chain).

How long does an exchange recovery take?

From a few days to several weeks, and most exchanges charge for it. Procedures and fees vary widely; the exchange’s own help centre is the only reliable source for its policy.

Someone on Telegram says they can recover my funds. Should I try?

No. Recovery scams target exactly this situation. Nobody outside the wallet’s owner can move the funds, no matter what tool they claim to have. Never share a seed phrase, never pay upfront, never install “recovery software”.

I sent a token to its own contract address. Is that the same problem?

It is a different one, and usually a final one: unless the contract has a function to return tokens, there is no key that can move them. Check the token’s documentation or ask its developers — but be prepared for the answer.
